The Midnight Library

I’m nearing the end of two incredibly long, 1,200-page books. Amazing books.

I started War and Peace, and the Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy, in December (4 months ago.) I’m reading W&P in a big paperback version, P&V translation, and KL on my Kindle Paperwhite, and that has worked out very well for me.

(I just found your feed this morning. I’m in Georgia too!)

Those are two big ones! I have never read either of them but have KL on my radar as something I want to read eventually. I think I’ll end up purchasing it for my Kindle Paperwhite so I can take my time and not feel rushed (as opposed to getting it from the library). Where in Georgia are you?

I had no intention of piggy-backing another long read on top of W&P, but when Amazon teased me with KL for $.99 for the whole trilogy in the best translation, I couldn’t resist. Like you, Kristin had been on my wishlist for a long time, and I have been really enjoying it (her?). I had read Undset’s Olav Audunssøn (four volumes) years ago and couldn’t stop thinking about it (him?), and I’ve always wanted to read KL after that.

I found some podcasts on Kristin Lavransdatter, and those have really increased my enjoyment and comprehension of it all.

(FWIW, W&P is better reading in physical version … and I did quite a bit of prep before diving in/chipping away at this big one. I know it’s not on your list, but may be helpful to others.)

I’m in Marietta. We have gotten quite a bit of rain today too.

I'll have to look up those podcasts if I ever get to KL. I am also a sucker for the 99 cent Kindle books!

I'm currently about two thirds of the way through Keith Rosson's "Coffin Moon" and I'm enjoying it quite a lot. On Audible I'm listening to Andy Weir's "Project Hail Mary" -- I read my hardcover edition when it came out and the Audible version is delightful.

PHM is such an incredible book! Have you read any of Weir’s other books?

Yes it is! It was my favorite book of the year when it came out.

And yes, I have! I loved "The Martian" and "Artemis" from Weir. Both are on my shelf.

I enjoyed Margo's Got Money Troubles so much I programmed it for my book 📖 club. I decided to read another Rufi Thorpe book and also enjoyed Dear Fang, With Love. CW: language, drug use, mental health episodes.

The Margo book is on my radar! Your recommendation makes me even more excited to try it.

We all liked it very much. 💖📚

I stopped using screens during breakfast for Lent so I've been burning through books lately. One was Shirley Hazzard's Transit of Venus which immediately became one of my top novels ever and am now reading her other books. Also finished The House of Mirth which I know I started in high school and Edith Wharton is always astounding.

And I'm always reading an extremely stupid thriller on my kindle, haha.

Finished “Hyperion” by Dan Simmons a couple weeks ago, which was a bit of a let down (didn’t expect such a steep cliffhanger after so many pages). I’m two-thirds of the way through “First Lie Wins,” by Ashley Elston. Next week I want to start George Sayers’ “Jack.”

The Wild Robot on audio and about to start The Names by Florence Knapp because Wild Robot shouldn’t take more than another hour to get through, haha! Just finished Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Next up: You Did Nothing Wrong by CG Drews, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, and If Beale Street Could Talk.

Eager to hear what you think about The Names!

I'm in a multitude of book clubs and have so many books going at once, but I'll tell you the ones currently next to me: The Victorians by A.N. Wilson, Barnaby Ridge by Dickens, Tales from the Perilous Realm by Tolkein, and Master & Commander by Patrick O'Brian.

That Tolkien book is on my want to read list, as well as the O’Brian series.
