Well now you made me cry...

I loved my "Grand-dog" too and it is always gut wrenching when we have to say goodbye to our beloved pets! πŸ’”

No one loves you like your dog and especially a rescued dog. Take comfort in knowing you gave him a safe and loving home and a good life. I'm so glad you take so many pictures. You will all have wonderful memories of Neyland Hank Crouch. He was a good boy and was one lucky hound the day he went home with you guys!!!

What a lovely tribute. I appreciate your non-"pet mom" perspective Neyland as I feel the same about our dog Ollie and am his "person." But they are still a sweet thread woven into our lives and losing them leaves a sad hole. He was a beautiful dog with a great story. Thank you for sharing.

They really are an integral part of our lives. I cried on and off for two days after he died, which was much more than I expected! I hope you get to have Ollie for a long time :)

I put off reading this because I knew I would cry. I adopted our Roxie during one of my husband’s military deployments when our daughters were 5 and 2. When he called from Iraq and I told him about our new family member, he said, β€œWell, at least I can’t be blamed for this.” πŸ˜† Roxie moved with us to NC, PA, TN, across the ocean to Hawaii, and back to NC. She was a constant in our girls’ ever-changing homes and my companion through countless deployments. She could be naughty, too - like Neyland, she was a master at snatching food off the counters. She could scale a six-foot fence to visit the neighbors and would bark at the front door to be let back in. πŸ˜‚ We said goodbye to her on Good Friday 2025, at 14 years old.

Thank you for sharing your stories of Neyland. I pray that your family is finding comfort and joy in your memories. ❀️

Thank you for reading, Erin. It's been two months and I think the grief is starting to subside a bit. I have finally been able to leave food on the counter without thinking twice. But he still comes to mind so often, and today, we offered to keep a friend's dog for a week and my little two are SO excited. It sparked a long conversation about Neyland, including our youngest saying, "I used to like when I could lay on him." I now feel myself somewhat wanting another furry friend... but maybe a cat or a small dog that can't reach the counters. :)

We now have 2 cats! πŸ˜† And when our daughter is home from college she brings hers - 3 cats in the house is crazy to me, but here we are. πŸ˜‚ They are no Roxie, but they are sweet and snuggly. I’ve learned that reading a book with a cat curled on your lap is a delight. 😊

That's honestly what I have been envisioning. I'm curious if you have any tips on how to make sure the cat you're getting is sweet and snuggly! Were they kittens or did you adopt them as adults?

They are rescues from a local β€œcat cafe.” One was about six months old, and the other was a little over a year old. My husband and daughter went to the cafΓ© for an hour to hang out with the cats and play with them. One of these cats climbed into my daughterβ€˜s lap and curled up right there on the floor of the cafΓ©. The other one slowly made his way up to my husband’s side and curled up there. Their personalities have remained true to that first impression!

I love that so much. I’ve told myself we have to wait until after summer, but I feel my resolve wearing down!
