I also LOVE sharing resources and I'm a spiritual abuse researcher in academia. I think a really accessible one is Holy Hurt by Hillary McBride. She has a podcast and a book of it. I write about it occasionally in my newsletter speaking to the pattern of spiritual abuse in general across diverse spiritual traditions. I also sometimes include earth based perspectives for healing.
Her voice is really lovely, so I have the book, but kept going back to the podcast. She takes a really wide view of spiritual abuse and brings in trauma research.
This is a great and helpful list, Chelsey, thanks for putting this together and sharing it. I have my own running list of resources, and you’ve helped me add a few more! I was at a spiritual abuse conference this past weekend where we had a table of books for people to browse, and I’m encouraged to see this list grow. Here are some from that table which you might consider as well:
-Spiritual Abuse Recovery Workbook (Karen Roudkovski’s companion to her first book)
"The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse" helped me to realize that I wasn't crazy and probably saved my life. I will be looking for these other resources you have recommended. Thank you, Chelsey!
Wow, what a recommendation. I’m sorry you have experienced that level of harm, but I’m so glad you found a way out. I definitely want to get to that one—I hope you find some of the other resources I mentioned helpful as well.
